Returning To A Fitness Program After A Flu or Cold

There's nothing worse than beginning to get results on a fitness and or weight loss/ fat loss program and then having it derailed with a flu or a cold.  This Saturday, during a training session I had someone inadvertently cough in my face.  I know weird, but it happened.

Anyway, I didn't think much of it until hours after the workout when I started coughing.  Usually when I feel a flu or cold coming on, I really step up my nutrition and try to get in extra vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately I was already set on getting together at my brothers house, watching the UFC and having a diet break.  I don't think the bacon wrapped hot dogs did much for helping me fight off the infection.

To make it worse, I got together with some friends yesterday to catch the Super Bowl.  Let's just say the diet for the day wasn't anywhere close to nutritious.

Unfortunately I'm paying for it today.  The cough got worse and a fever kicked in.  Earlier this morning I wasn't hungry at all.  I actually unknowingly skipped lunch.  You would think that would be a good thing if you're trying to lose fat weight or keep the fat off.  In actuality, it's a really bad thing, since your not feeding you body and more importantly, not feeding your muscle.  Not feeding your muscle is a very bad thing when you're trying to keep your metabolism revved up.

So anyway, I've learned through experience that the best thing to do after a flu or cold is to start working out really lightly.  If you try to start off where you left off before the flu or cold, you might be really disappointed with your performance.

This disappointment can be detrimental to your motivation and can hurt your long term goals.  If you're getting over the flu or a cold,  it's best to slowly get back into your fitness and workout routine and start back with a positive workout.
